Spencer Pitfield, Parliamentary Candidate for Penistone and Stocksbridge, together with local Conservative Councillors continue to express concern about the volume of heavy goods vehicles using narrow country lanes and village streets in the Penistone area.

Silkstone is one village where residents have to contend with large numbers of HGVs on a regular basis. Significantly these heavy goods vehicles are neither delivering to nor collecting from local businesses. They are using the area as a cut-through rather than staying on main trunk roads.

Spencer Pitfield said: "HGVs are using Silkstone High Street and Silkstone Lane as a short cut. Many are using satellite navigation systems designed for private cars and not heavy goods vehicles. These private navigation systems direct the HGVs away from trunk roads onto narrow lanes which are just not designed to carry such large lorries”.

Spencer added: “Local Conservative Councillors and I have asked for weight restrictions on a number of roads, but our requests continue to fall on deaf ears at Barnsley MBC."
 
Cllr. Robert Barnard, member for Penistone East said: "Barnsley Council's lack of response to the entirely reasonable requests of local residents and Councillors is not acceptable. Other Councils, such as Leeds, have shown that HGV restrictions are possible but Barnsley persists in riding rough-shod over the wishes of Council Taxpayers and their representatives. The local Conservative team will continue to press our case for HGV weight restrictions in this area."
