Spencer Pitfield, Parliamentary Candidate for Penistone & Stocksbridge, this week joined with local Penistone West ward Councillors to demand a much improved crossing for children outside Millhouse Green School.
Currently there are a small number of signs around the area, but no physically marked crossing for children.
Spencer said: “The A628 is a very busy main road as it links the west side of Barnsley and Sheffield to Manchester. As a result of this the speed of some traffic is not only often well over the limit of 40 miles an hour, but also has the added danger of large numbers of HGVs using the road
He continued: “Whilst Millhouse Green is a small rural school it still has a substantial number of children and parents crossing this busy road, especially with the new housing development on the other side of the road. I am calling on Barnsley MBC to take another look at this location and bring forward plans for a more visible and safer pedestrian crossing for our young people”.
Cllr. Andrew Millner, local ward member for Penistone West commented: “I do agree with Spencer that urgent action needs to be taken to provide a better quality crossing area for the children. I have already raised this with Council Officers and am waiting for their proposals about what could be done to improve the currently dangerous situation”.
